You are probably familiar with the rather unusual steps I’ve taken on my healing journey and hippie transition. You were there to cheer me on when started making my own shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste. You offered words of advice when I explained that I had stopped bathing with soap, that I was washing my face with oil, and that I was slathering my body with beef fat (read about it here, if you dare).
Obviously, I’m enthusiastic about eliminating the toxins I put on my body and use in my home. But this is a learning process, and one I couldn’t manage without a few great resources. One of the more recent resources I’ve been using is Robin’s new book Toxic Free .
Toxic Free contains two main sections: chemical free personal care product and chemical free cleaning essentials. As I was reading over the recipes, the clean freak in me sang a little victory song. The first thing that caught my eye was the homemade bleach alternative… finally, a safe alternative to that chemical stew!
Robin kindly agreed to let me share the recipe with you for a sneak peak of the book!
Non-Toxic Bleach Recipe This non-toxic bleach recipe is an alternative to the caustic and smelly household cleaner. You only need lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide and water. Ingredients - 1½ cups 3% hydrogen peroxide
- ½ cup lemon juice
- Distilled water to fill a gallon jug
- 10-12 drops lemon essential oil
Instructions - Mix all ingredients together in non-clear gallon jug (to keep the hydrogen peroxide active it needs to be in a dark bottle, like an old Bleach bottle). Gently shake to combine.
- Use one cup of homemade bleach in your washing cycle to whiten clothes.

I love this post! I have to say…I use HP to clean everything. My cutting boards, my Vitamix, all my fruits and veggies. And I just LOVE your recipe for homemade “bleach.” I too enjoy making my own products for the home or beauty. I’ll be pinning and sharing this post my friend.
Hugs,

is it non toxic to fish?
I also use peroxide, baking soda (sometimes w lemon juice); vinegar too, for all cleaning. So inexpensive and non-toxic.
Some homemade recipes call for a bit of dish detergent. That’s a NO for, furniture floors & other hard surfaces: causes streaks, leaves a filmy residue.
