A DIY makeup remover that works!
Say goodbye to rubbing and scrubbing while you attempt to remove stubborn mascara. Say goodbye to raccoon eyes after you wash your face. Say goodbye to red eyes and irritated skin caused by harsh makeup removers. And say hello to clean, clear skin. Because this works… really works!
The two ingredients in this simply DIY makeup remover instantly dissolves makeup, including waterproof mascara, while soothing the skin. Unlike some oil-based makeup removers, this won’t clog pores or cause breakouts.
This recipe is inspired by my experience with Enessa Lavender Makeup Remover, which contains jojoba oil, vitamin E oil, and lavender essential oil. Like the other Enessa products I’ve tried, I fell in love with this remover when I first tried it. This DIY version is quite similar and removes makeup like a charm.
Recently, I had the privilege to write a post about The Top 8 Skincare Oils under the guidance of Michelle Ornstein, Enessa’s founder and THE expert in holistic skincare. Are you afraid of using oil on your skin? Don’t be! Here’s why. (Plus, I share an exclusive coupon code in the post for Enessa products, valid through December).
DIY Makeup Remover: The Star Ingredients
Jojoba Oil
- Interestingly, jojoba oil isn’t an oil, it’s a a liquid wax ester made from expeller-pressed jojoba seeds.
- It is the closest thing in nature to our own sebum. It doesn’t clog pores and it works perfectly for all skin types.
- Jojoba oil gently dissolves even stubborn makeup without irritating the skin or eyes.
- It soothes and moisturizes the skin.
- If you have oily skin, don’t be afraid to use skincare oils! Jojoba oil dissolves excess sebum, allowing the pores to breathe.
Vitamin E Oil
- A powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin against damage and also protects the jojoba oil against oxidative damage.
- It soothes and moisturizes the skin.
- Make sure your vitamin E is GMO-free! These vitamin E capsules are perfect for this recipe and are GMO-free.
How to store your DIY Makeup Remover
You know that annoying saying, Do as I say, not as I do? Yeah, do that.
Because light can damage and oxidize (rancidify) the jojoba oil and vitamin E, do not store this in a clear glass jar. I put the makeup remover in a clear jar for the pictures, because it looks pretty and I wanted to show the golden color. I actually keep mine in a dark glass dropper bottle. The dark glass prevents light from oxidizing the oils. You can find the dark dropper bottle here.
DIY Makeup Remover Recipe
You will need:
- Scant 2 oz. jojoba oil (or use more if you have a bigger jar)
- 1 capsule of non-GMO vitamin E (Technically, this is optional but extremely recommended)
- Optional: 3 drops of soothing essential oil (I use carrot seed essential oil)
- Dark glass dropper bottle for storage, such as this one
Here’s what to do:
- Fill the glass jar about 3/4 of the way with the jojoba oil. Prick the vitamin E capsule with a needle or the tip of a sharp knife. Squeeze the contents of the capsule into the jar. Place the lid on the jar and shake well to combine.
- When you are ready to remove your makeup, use about 1/2 teaspoon of your DIY Makeup Remover. Gently massage it onto your face, especially the eye area. It removes mascara like a charm, just be sure you use enough to fully saturate the eye area. Then, gently wipe off the oil with a cotton pad or damp washcloth. Voila, makeup all gone!
- Cleanse your face with the Honey Cleansing Method or a gentle facial cleanser.
I’m excited to try this! So I have vitamin E oil already, but not in capsule form. What would the measurement be for just the straight oil?
There is probably 1/8th teaspoon of oil in each capsule that I used 🙂
Thank you! 🙂
This looks great! If I were to use this, then the honey cleanser, then the ACV toner, what would I then use for moisturizer before bed at night/makeup during the day?
Can this Recipe be used as a general cleanser too?
I use something very similar to this as my daily face moisturizer! Mostly jojoba oil with a bit of tamanu oil in the summer and a bit of borage oil in the winter, and a small bit of lavender essential oil in an amber dropper bottle. I had used jojoba as well to remove makeup the few times I wear it but I didn’t think of adding the vitamin E, I will give that a try next time. Thanks for all the tips!
What essential oil would you recommend for someone like me who has cystic acne? I’ve heard tea tree oil is good, but can be very strong. I’m excited to try this and ditch my store-bought cleansers for good!
I think Lauren’s book “Quit Acne” would be perfect for you if you haven’t already found out about it on here.
How many washes would you say you get out of this on average? 🙂
Where can i find scented oils whar can b used to replace coconut oil i was thinkin og another recipe that would go great with your my daughter as acne too
i need an exfoliating lotion or moisturer. Thank you so much
Do you recommend another soothing oil to use instead of carrot oil?
Thanks!
Jennifer V.
I just made it and am looking forward to trying it on a day that I am wearing some makeup…one question though, do you have any recommendations on storage for this? Is room temperature just fine? Thank you!!
I love this! I am slowly but surely eliminating chemicals from my house hold products, which includes beauty products like facial cleanser and make up, and I love this! I am definitely going to try it the next time I can get over to Whole Foods to fetch the ingredients! Thank you – sharing and saving at Affimity!
