Safe Cookware Giveaway: 10 Piece Stainless Steel Set!

safe cookware discussion, plus a Will Mint Shop promo code

Take a safe cookware tip from the birds!

Did you know that owners of pet birds are directed to avoid using non-stick cookware and/or keep the birds out of the kitchen? This is because heating the non-stick coating on the cookware releases the chemical PFOA in the form of toxic fumes, particularly over high heat or if the pan is old. These toxic fumes can quickly kill a bird, a phenomenon called “Teflon Poisoning” or PTFE Toxicity. Although birds face extreme sensitivity to the toxic fumes of non-stick cookware due to their anatomy and metabolism, it certainly should raise a red flag about the safety of using non-stick cookware in your home.

PFCs in Non-Stick Cookware

PFCs stands for perfluorinated compounds, a group of toxic chemicals found in the coating of non-stick cookware. Two of the most common types of perfluorinated compounds include  PFOA (perfluorooctonoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate), both of which are considered by the EPA to be a likely human carcinogen. The potential carcinogenic properties aren’t the only health concern with these toxic chemicals, since exposure to PFCs is linked to:

Aluminum: another toxic cookware material

Aluminum is a common cookware material, however it is a neurotoxin and carries a wide variety of health issues if ingested. Aluminum in pots and pans can leach into food, particularly acidic foods.  Although it is advisable to toss any and all aluminum cookware, you have more leeway when it comes to aluminum bakeware if you use safe materials in-between the food and the aluminum surface. For example, cover an aluminum baking sheet with unbleached parchment paper or use safe paper baking cups in an aluminum muffin tin.

Stainless Steel: a durable and safe cookware option

Are you trying to make the switch to safe cookware? An all-purpose stainless steel cookware set is a simple place to start. According to Wild Mint Shop’s Stainless Steel FAQs, stainless steel:

  • won’t alter the taste of the food or beverage it is carrying
  • is odorless
  • won’t leach toxins into contents it is holding
  • is recyclable
  • has excellent resistance to staining or rusting
  • is easy to clean
  • maintains its strength at high temperatures
  • is durable
  • is sanitary

A common concern I hear about stainless steel cookware is that food sticks to it. It’s actually easy to prevent food from sticking, the trick is properly preheating your stainless pan. Today, I’m excited to give away a 10-piece Stainless Steel Cookware Set, courtesy of Wild Mint Shop. Follow the directions below to enter the giveaway!

  • Plastic storage containers can leach BPA or other plastic toxins into food. Glass food storage containers provide a safe alternative, plus they look nice enough to carry from fridge to dining table.
  • Plastic water bottles also can leach BPA into water, so that’s why I use a glass water bottle. Wild Mint Shop carries Lifefactory Water Bottles as well as other styles and varieties of glass water bottles.
  • I am swooning over the Stainless Steel Lunch Box set, cute eco-friendly lunch bags, and reusable snack bags. Although I work at home and don’t need to pack a lunch, I am tempted to get a cute lunch set just for the kick of neatly organizing my midday meal into these adorable storage options!

I LOVE that they have all of the natural products in different categories I am always searching for on one site!

  2. Kristin Waters says

I am loving the cute lunch bags! Our dog chewed our daughter’s and I haven’t been able to locate some really cute and sturdy ones. Glass water bottles, too – love those!!

    Hi again!
On a separate topic ( I looked for an email, but did not find one) I am curious if you can direct me to resources for balancing hormones other than for PMS. I was diagnosed with hypogonadatropic hypogonadism ( basically, it’s an idiopathic condition in which your body stops producing FSH LH, and estrogen – resulting in no period and no ovulation). I am currently on a low dose BC pill, but would like to not continue it due to leaky gut stuff. Any suggestions, referrals or musings are greatly appreciated ! Thanks for your time :)

I would love to see an all-glass and metal french press available. All the ones I have found in shops and grocery stores have plastic and chrome. Ugh.

You can also check out Amazon for glass and metal french presses…tons of them. After eventually breaking two of the glass ones, I ordered a Stainless steel french press by LacaFetier from Amazon. I love it! It’s also insulated a bit so there’s hot coffee to the end. I even take it with me in the car (after the coffee is brewed and the plunger has been pushed down) if I’m late to work…holds more than my insulated cup.

Great store! They might also like to carry Moso bamboo charcoal bags. I’ve found them very beneficial to air quality in my home.

  6. Jaime says

So many fun things! I LOVE the reusable snack and sandwich baggies. I’d feel so much better about using them than plastic baggies or even tupperware.

  7. Jamie S. says

One of the first things I want to do when I get out of debt is to remove toxins from my home. My cookware needs a complete overhaul! I also really want a new stock pot since mine is weird and rusty.

  8. Angela B says

I’ve never seen veggie sidewalk chalk before.. super cool~ I think it would be nice to get some of the glass straws too. I just wonder how durable they are. Lots of nice things on the website! Thanks for the giveaway.

  9. Kelly D says

I would purchase the LuSa Organics ~ Lullaby Handcrafted Bar Soap (Lavender & Chamomile) and the Valley Green Naturals ~ Fabulous Foot Cream with Avocado Butter

  10. linda says

I would buy the lunch sets for my kids who are on the GAPS diet. Next year my little one will be starting pre-k, and I’m sure it will be very labor intensive. Almost a year on the diet, with great success. I can’t allow a little thing like not having storage containers for food to set us back. I’m sure there will be plenty of other set backs to worry about. Any way the containers are so fun looking!

  11. Rachel Swendsrud says

Would love to incorporate the reusable lunch/snack bags. Thats something I stink at, I pack stuff every day for my job but its all in stuff I end up throwing away. Love the glass containers, and all the cooking stuff as well.

  12. Megan R says

I would LOVE to purchase Eco Me Air fresheners! I Have been struggling to find natural ones to use! Thanks for the opportunity!

  15. Ashley McKenna says

I definitely need some non-nonstick cookware! Hope to win, but will use the discount code if not. Also – would love to see 100% beeswax candles, not a beeswax/soy blend.

  16. Judy M. says

Thank you for introducing me to this company. I have been on the hunt for the “perfect sippy cup” that is not plastic and I think I found it in the Eco Vessel Insulated Sippy Cup. It’s so colorful too and I like that it has 2 handles and not a lot of parts that can get lost. Plus, it keeps things cold. Perfect. I will be buying that one. So many good things on this site.

Recently I joined a program and lunch is not provided. So the stainless glass snack jars would come in handy.
